Flagship Company, Altairnano, Continues to Expand

Flagship Enterprise Center (FEC) client, Altairnano Inc., is once again experiencing tremendous growth and making news in the energy industry. Originally housed in the FEC’s main incubator, Altairnano expanded into the 70,000 square foot Flagship Energy Systems Center in 2008. Now, as demand for the company’s energy storage systems ramps up, it is expanding its sales staff and will again have a presence in the incubator.

Altairnano is a Canadian corporation with a major U.S. presence in Reno, Nevada, as well as its Anderson branch. According to John Fallini, CFO of Altairnano Inc, “Our mission is to be the leading global provider of energy storage systems for clean, efficient power and energy management.” Fallini continues, “We are focused on opportunities in the electric grid, renewables integration and mass-transit markets.” Within Anderson and the FEC, the company performs all of the engineering and assembly of its various energy storage system products.

Altairnano has also made significant inroads into the mass-transit arena. In August of 2009, it signed a $900,000 contract with South Carolina-based transportation company Proterra to deliver battery modules for Proterra’s zero emissions EV and HEV bus platforms. The unique technology of this innovative bus system, built from the ground up around the chemical properties of Altairnano’s proprietary battery chemistry provides fuel efficiencies that are 400+% better than conventional diesel and natural gas buses. In addition to Proterra, Altairnano has filled the mass-transit sales pipeline with 16 advanced opportunities nationally and abroad.

FEC Executive Director, DeWayne Landwehr, comments on Altairnano’s impressive success and history with the FEC, “It is so exciting to be able to assist a great company such as Altairnano, and we are happy to provide whatever service we can to assist their growth. They have been a great client from the beginning, and are positioning themselves to continue their pattern of job growth for this community.”

Created through a partnership between Anderson University and the City of Anderson, the Flagship Enterprise Center serves as a small business incubator and growth stage business accelerator. Through its client-specific Client Support Program, the FEC helps emerging companies to become independently viable. Located at I-69 and (exit 22) in Anderson, the FEC provides ongoing contact with management consultants, university researchers, student mentoring opportunities and access to capital.
